Before I attended the International Forum on Intercountry Adoption
and Global Surrogacy in The Hague this book was merely an idea. I am
therefore greatly indebted to Kristen Cheney and Karen Smith Rotabi
for their vision, energy and superb organizational skills in making it
happen.
Among the many experts who also worked so hard to make the Forum
such a groundbreaking and inspirational event, I owe a lot to Marcy
Darnovsky, for finding space for me in the Global Surrogacy Practices
thematic area despite those sessions being so often oversubscribed,
and to Marsha Tyson Darling, for giving me the initial confidence to
proceed with this project. Marsha not only agreed to contribute early on
but introduced me to many of the other Forum participants who came
on board. I am also grateful to Deepa Venkatachalam, director of Sama
Resource Group for Women and Health, who gave the keynote address
on global surrogacy and agreed to commission the chapter on ‘agentfacilitators’
and recruitment of surrogates in India. Thanks to you all.
This book could not have been produced without you.
Closer to home, I’d like to acknowledge the support of Julia Feast and
Shaila Shah of CoramBAAF Adoption & Fostering Academy for alerting
me to the Forum in the first place. From the early days of Third World
– Second Sex (Zed Books, 1983), Shaila has witnessed my development
as an editor committed to giving voice to women’s perspectives around
the world. I value her friendship as well as her willingness to offer advice
and to share her own considerable editorial skills. For inspiration and
encouragement I also owe a huge thank you to another friend and
colleague at CoramBAAF, Michelle Bell, who supported this project from
the very beginning.
