People say that writing a book is never easy. I am not in a position to know if this is right. It is certainly true, however, that writing this particular book was not easy. The chapters contained here have gone through a great many drafts. The ideas are the product of many years of research and reflection. The writing process has also spanned a number of important stages of my life and the challenges which have come with those. The process of writing has, however, been made vastly easier by the presence of some truly wonderful people in my life. I owe each of them an immeasurable debt of gratitude. My first and most utmost thanks go to Liz Fisher, Professor of Environmental Law at the University of Oxford. Liz supervised the doctoral work from which this book developed. She is a truly remarkable supervisor, scholar and friend. Her scholarly fervour is matched only by her warmth and humility. I will be forever grateful for all of the support she has given me. My doctoral research was generously funded by a full studentship from the Arts and Humanities Research Council. This was a life-changing opportunity and opened doors which would not otherwise have been available. I feel very fortunate to have been a recipient.
