This book was written while I was in receipt of funding from the Osk. Huttunen Foundation and the Academy of Finland Centre of Excellence in the History of Experiences based at the Tampere University, Finland. I thank the Foundation for their support while I worked as a visiting postdoctoral researcher at Uppsala University in 2017 and the Centre for providing me with an excellent and inspiring working environment in 2018. The book is largely based on my doctoral dissertation, which was completed in 2015. I would like to express my warmest gratitude to my mentor, Prof. Raisa Maria Toivo, who was always willing to share her vast knowledge of early modern history and offer me advice and support in my academic career.
